The suite of characteristics that allows some plants to survive in habitats with little liquid water, such as deserts and alpine and arctic habitats.   Xeromorphic characters include thick leaves, heavy cuticles and dense trichomes on leaves and stems, few and sunken stomata, CAM or C4 photosynthesis, and mechanical and chemical defenses.
